Tango Teachers and Classes

Victoria -Tango with Larry

Tango  is more of a journey than a destination as they say. To learn tango it is more about understanding the three pillars, connection, balance, musicality. It is more important to learn the basics well and let the rest evolve by inspiration and creativity. I do not believe much in teaching figures, it just confuses people. Learning Tango is about understanding how the movements work and how to make it work with your partner. To learn movements it is important to understand technique. All figures are just a combination of movements, nothing more, nothing less it is just that simple

Classes start Mar 5, 2019 - Westside Community Center ( Juan de Fuca Center)

Victoria- Vanessa Winn

Vanessa has been dancing since childhood, when her family co-founded Victoria’s international folk dancing club. After exploring other dance forms, she was drawn to Argentine tango in 2004 by its creative potential, with its unique blend of improvisation and structure. Having studied and danced throughout the Northwest region and abroad, she appreciates tango's opportunity for shared expression and embodiment of the music. Her teaching focuses on the basic elements of balance, posture, technique, connection to one's partner and the music that makes dance possible.

Private and group lessons available. For more info,

Nanaimo -Gabriola Island – Gwen Spinks

My philosophy  –  I believe that through dance we gain a greater understanding of ourselves and how we relate to others. I teach about a dozen dances (Ballroom, Latin, Swing, etc.) however, it is Argentine Tango that has captured my attention and passion – I have been to Buenos Aires 5 times . Three time I have taken students with me so they could experience the birthplace of Tango. I had the good fortune of meeting Manuel Ortiz (the Black Panther of Tango) on my first trip to BA. I have since brought him and his partner, Laura Rodriguez to Canada 3 times and I study with him when I’m in BA.

I have adjudicated for Campeonato Intercontinental de Tango in Brazil in 2009 and in Buenos Aires in 2010.

I also teach a workshop called “Transforming thru Tango” –  I have been developing this workshop for as long as I have been teaching; however, it was in 2008 that I gave it a name and separated it out from my regular classes.   I teach private and group classes – please contact me: 250-247-9756  www.gwenspinks.com
